"70/20 Celebration"

70 20 Celebration The 2008 year, although practically brand new, promises to hold many events that will go down in the history books. For members of the Flint River Council, Boy Scouts of America, 2008 marks the anniversary of two of the most important facets of our camping program. Seventy years ago, in 1938, land was purchased along the Flint River in Upson County to build a camping facility to serve the youth of our area and Camp Thunder was born. In 1988, twenty years ago, the Gerald I. Lawhorn Canoe Base and Training Center was built to provide our youth with a high adventure program and camping.

The “ 70/20 Celebration” is now being planned and will be an event for all age groups. Bring your Pack or Troop, or come with your family and friends for a day of celebration and memories. Help us to honor the volunteers and professional, past and present, that actually make the Gerald I. Lawhorn Scouting Base what it is today – one of the premier Boy Scout camping facilities in the nation.

Enjoy various activities during the day, see historic displays, or get involved with a patch swap session. See all of the new construction and renovations being made at both camps. Overnight camping will be available at both camps on a first-come, first-served basis. Call to make your reservations.

The anniversary celebration ceremony will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, with honored guests and dignitaries participating. This activity will take place at the new pavilion at ScoutParents Park at the Flint River Area of the Gerald I. Lawhorn Scouting Base and should last approximately 30 minutes.

A very special, uniquely designed and highly collectible 70/20 celebration patch will be unveiled that day for purchase. There will not be any food provided. Mark your calendars and make your plans now to join us for a day of celebration, a day of memories, a day of history, and a day of honor, but most of all, join us for a day of fun and fellowship.
